If you are travel a lot (like me) or are planning a big trip and unsure which e-sim to try, then keep reading. This is my honest review of GigSky after using it for my recent trip around Central and South America. I’ll explain how it worked for me, what I loved, and whether I’d recommend it for your next trip.
GigSky Review: Why This eSIM Made My Multi-Country Trip So Much Easier:
As a solo female traveller, the most important thing I need when I’m travelling an internet connection that actually works.
Whether it’s loading Google Maps in the middle of a new city, keeping my family updated that I’m alive (my mom worries a lot), or even uploading my Instagram stories… staying connected has become such a big part of how I travel.
So for my recent South America trip I was visiting multiple countries such as Brazil, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Mexico so I needed a reliable but affordable e-sim.
I decided to finally try GigSky, an eSIM company I’d seen recommended a lot but hadn’t used before. What surprised me most is that although I trialled it in South America, GigSky is brilliant no matter where you’re travelling to. It works in 190+ countries, so once I realised how seamless it was, I instantly thought: This would have saved me so much stress on my trip in Asia and Africa…
What is GigSky?
GigSky is a global eSIM provider that lets you get mobile data without buying a physical SIM card. Everything is done through their app:
- Choose a country, regional or global plan
- Install the eSIM
- Switch it on when you land
No queues at airport kiosks, no swapping SIM trays, no worrying you’ll misplace your normal SIM somewhere (I have had many panics about my Irish sim in the past).
I chose their South America regional plan, but they also have options for Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and a plan that covers almost everywhere.
Why I Chose GigSky:
Why I Chose GigSky
- I was doing a multi-country route
My itinerary was a bit chaotic (as usual), and I didn’t want the hassle of picking up a new SIM at every border. I did a lot of land border crossings too so having one plan that worked across all the countries I was visiting made everything so much easier.
- I needed reliable upload speeds
When you’re posting daily travel content, dodgy Wi-Fi is the bane of your life. I needed something fast enough to upload Reels, stories, and photos even on buses or in smaller towns.
- They offer a free trial
This was the thing that sold me. You can test the coverage before paying. I’ve never seen another eSIM do this, and it instantly made me feel like the company was confident in their product. And made me confident as a customer.
- Unlimited Plans are very affordable:
When I have bought e-sims before I normally but a small GB amount as the Umlimited option is usually way too expensive. What I loved about GigSky is the Umlimited options are very good value and because I went with this option I didn’t run out of data or have anxiety on running out of it. I also was able to watch Netflix on long bus journeys guilt free!
- Easy to install: An e-sim that is easy to install and get connected quickly is also important to me. You need wifi to install and with GigSky it literally look a few minutes to setup and you only have to do it once. After the first time add to your sim is very quicker.
My Experience Using GigSky Across LATAM:
Brazil:
GigSky worked perfectly in Rio. I only stayed in Rio and of course it was a big city so the connection as pretty good. It was important for having signal in Rio for other Uber Moto and I was travelling solo here. I also went to one of the famous Pedro de Sal street parties that has loads of people and still had data here too.
Mexico:
I was only in Mexico for a few days and was mainly in Cancun and a day trip out to the Chichen Itza. The e-sim worked perfectly well and only a few patchy points on my bus to the world wonder. It is quite remote so that is perfectly normal but it was never for long.
Belize:
Belize is known for being pricey for data, so having GigSky already active saved both time and money. Speeds were solid in Caye Caulker and Belize City. At one stage our group were in the jungle and caves in San Ignacio, and I actually had data here!
Guatemala
Guatemala can be hit or miss when it comes to connectivity, but GigSky was surprisingly reliable. I used it in Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Flores with no issues. The girls on my group trip used another e-sim company at there were many times that I had connection when they didn’t.
El Salvador:
El Salvador wasn’t covered under the regional package I chose, so I just bought an Unlimited plan for the number of days I was there. For most of my trip I was staying in a remote hostel outside El Tunco and never had any connections issues.
5 Things I Really Loved:
- The setup took less than a minute
Of all the e-SIM’s I have tried, it was the quickest and most seamless to setup. I’m not I installed the eSIM, followed the prompts, and was online almost instantly!
- The free trial is genuinely brilliant
I tested the speeds before buying. Such a small thing, but it makes a massive difference when you’re already on the road. This was great for peace of mind before buying.
- It handled border crossings effortlessly
Crossing borders between countries can be chaotic enough. With GigSky, my phone automatically switched networks each time. I didn’t have to restart my phone or start messing with settings. It just worked.
- Excellent upload speeds
I never once struggled to upload a story, even in busy cities or on long journeys.
- Customer service is actually… good
Every time I sent a message (even small questions), they replied within minutes. That level of support is rare and so reassuring when travelling solo.
