If you’re going to Gudauri for their first ski experience, a little preparation can go a long way toward ensuring a memorable and enjoyable trip. Here are my top tips:
- Gear Up Properly: Ensure you have the right skiing gear, including waterproof skiing attire, gloves, goggles, and a helmet. I would recommend renting equipment on-site if you’re a beginner. Don’t invest in personal gear just yet until you see if you like the sport. In Gudauri most hotels you can rent helmet, poles, ski boots for a pretty reasonable price.
- Take Skiing Lessons: This is must if you’re a beginner and I even recommend trying a lesson before you go on your trip. I did one lesson in The Snow Centre in Hemel Hampstead (about an hour outside London) and it made such a difference! When you get to Gudauri there is a ski school and professional ski instructors to book 1:1 or group lessons. Booking a lesson or two will mean you get the basics right and improve your confidence on the slopes.
- Start Small: Begin your skiing adventure on easier, beginner-friendly slopes. Gudauri has plenty of blue and green slopes that allow new skiers to practice and gradually build their skills. I recommend staying on the green slopes until you feel confident to take on a blue. On your first ski trip don’t push yourself to take on a red or black as it is quite dangerous.
- Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks: The physical exertion of skiing combined with the high altitude can quickly lead to dehydration and fatigue. Drink plenty of water and rest when needed. I packed a protein bar in my bum bag every day and it kept me going until lunch.
- Respect Ski Etiquette and Safety Rules: Familiarize yourself with basic ski etiquette and the resort’s safety guidelines to ensure a safe experience for yourself and others. The biggest learning for me was figuring out the ski pass and ski lifts.
- Enjoy the Scenery: Don’t forget to occasionally stop and take in the breathtaking views that Gudauri offers. Remember, skiing is not just about the sport but also enjoying the incredible natural beauty around you. So, pause and take in the stunning landscapes whenever possible!
Accessories and Clothes for Skiing as Beginner:
Before my ski trip to Gudauri I had no idea about what to wear skiing. Until you have your first trip it can be quite confusing what to pack and what to wear everyday. Admittedly I had a different ski suit every day which I did not need but the was worth it for the pics! You don’t need to be as extra as me but the list below is your skiing packing essentials:
- Ski Jacket + Ski Trousers / Ski Suit (waterproof) – Try get one with a ski pass pocket as it will make your life so much easier!
- Thermal base layers – bottoms and tops. I would bring 3-4 tops and 1-2 bottoms.
- Ski Gloves
- Ski Socks
- Ski Boots (you will wear these out and about in the snow when you are not skiing)
- Fleece (bring 1 or 2)
- Ski goggles
- Sunglasses
- Lip Balm (SPF Carmex was my life on this trip)
- Sunscreen
- Neck warmer
- Backpack/ bum bag – you will have this while skiing to hold your phone, purse, snacks etc.
- Hand warmers (optional)
How to Get to Gudauri from Tbilisi:
Traveling to Gudauri from Tbilisi is an adventure in itself, offering stunning views and a glimpse of Georgian countryside life. The most convenient route is the Georgian Military Highway, stretching directly from Tbilisi to Gudauri. The drive usually takes around 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions.
For those not keen on driving, bus services and shared minivans (marshrutkas) regularly ply this route, providing an affordable and reliable option. Alternatively, for a more comfortable and flexible trip, a number of companies offer private shuttle services, which can be booked in advance. Whichever mode of transportation you choose, the scenic journey to Gudauri is sure to be a memorable part of your skiing adventure.
